Transformation Heroes: Episode with Pierre Pelletier, Director of Customer Operations at Octopus Energy.
Pierre Pelletier left real estate seven years ago to join Plüm énergie, since rebranded as Octopus Energy France. Back then, the company had about twenty people. Today they're 500, and Pierre still holds the same conviction: if you want to accelerate the energy transition, you don't have the right to slow down.
His approach to customer operations rests on a simple but rare principle: total trust. At Octopus, every advisor can grant a goodwill gesture with no cap and no managerial sign-off. Pierre puts it bluntly: in seven years, there's never been a single abuse. When people are given responsibility, they act responsibly.
The episode also explores innovations shaking up the energy market: Eco-sessions, which pay customers to shift their consumption to off-peak hours, and the Zero-Bill Homes program, where Octopus commits to wiping out the energy bill for five years in exchange for controlling the household's electrical devices.
Pierre also shares his take on automation: neither tech dogma nor a refusal of progress. Octopus wants to be "tech and human," automating whatever simplifies life for employees and customers, while staying available when it counts. Two weeks ago, customers were still in the Lille offices.
Finally, we find out what sets Octopus apart from the rest of the market: a culture of embraced chaos, where two customer service agents coded a Chrome extension to fill a gap the tech team hadn't covered, and a 4.9 Trustpilot score that even makes the UK parent company blush.
